Lover of wisdom
THE PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE
My dear brothers and sisters…
Since I am a philosopher, I am extremely happy to speak something about
philosophy of life. The most relevant thing in our life is to know ourselves, be
ourselves, accept ours ourness and accept others otherness. Fr. Thomas Merton,
a great mystic of 20th century shares his experience in his book
‘The intimate Merton’. In course of time he derailed from his spiritual life
and daily routine as well. By realizing the attitudinal change he went for a
confession. After the confession the confessor advised him, Fr. Merton you fail
to understand who you are. If you know yourself, you will not commit mistake.
By realizing the value of self-awareness, Socrates advised his disciples to
know thyself. Unless and until we know ourselves we will not able to act as we
ought to act, that is the reason why Jesus advised people to take away the log
from their eyes, before judging the others. Taking the log is the process of
knowing oneself. A person with self-awareness will be successful in
understanding others by in the shoes of them.
The second step
in our life is to be ourselves; "If money is lost nothing is lost, if health is
lost something is lost, if character is lost everything is lost". So be what you
are. In Sanskrit class I studied- Acharyat paadamadatte padam sisyah
svamedhayaa paadam sabrahamacharibhyah. Means we need to learn from others.
Yes, but do not cut and paste as it is. Means do not add water into wine, if you
add, the pure essence of wine will lose. Diogenes a philosopher, used to have
bread and Lentils as his food. Once another philosopher called Aritippus
advised Diogenes to be a sycophant of king and enjoy the delicious food from
the palace. But Diogenes replied “Learn
to live in Bread and Lentiles and you will not have to cultivate the king.” Yes
we must have our own views, Convictions and conclusions. We must not lead our
lives like the algae in the flowing water. It is a reality that "the sun that
gives sight to the eagle and blinds the owl". It is true in our lives too. Our
thoughts may not be accepted by all. But we must remain merely as we are.
The third step in
our life is to accept our’s ourness; Human beings are not measure of all
things. The sun that gives light to the eagle and blinds the owl. likewise
philosophy of life may vary from person to person. Some people like to and try
to become someone. If you become someone
then who will accomplish the duties which are assigned to you? So accept our’s
ourness.
The fourth and
the last step is to accept others otherness. If we know ourselves, accept ourselves
and be ourselves then it is easy to accept other’s otherness. means if you can
run, then there is no doubt that you could walk.
Dear brothers and sisters, you are the creator of your life. “You can’t go back and
change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”
With this I remain, thank you. – BE
A GOOD PHILOSOPHER.
